Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom would be to correct the homework assigned the day before at the beginning of class. Then, we read related articles to the topics we are studying. After that we either listen to or look at media related to what we are studying. We then share ideas.

The majority of my students come from low-income families, and they are in the Title One program for free or reduced priced meals.

They are all Hispanics, with very similar personal circumstances, such as both parents working full-time and one or both of them not speaking English fluently, and not many of their parents have a college education. Few of them are newly arrived immigrants to the United States, but the majority are first-generation students whose home language is not English and who have been schooled primarily in the United States. Very few are second- or third-generation students who have learned some aspects of their heritage language at home. Canoga is the oldest high school in the west San Fernando Valley. It opened with 14 students and 3 teachers on October 4, 1914. Now it serves more than 1400 students. The majority of students are Latinos which is about 83%, Whites make up about 7% of the student body, and the rest is made of African Americans and other.

My Project

My students will utilize these books to practice reading, listening, comprehension and writing skills that will prepare them for the AP exam. This year the AP exam was changed. The updated AP Spanish Language and Culture exam is structured around six themes: Beauty and Aesthetics, Contemporary Life, Families and Communities, Global Challenges, Personal and Public Identities, Science and Technology. These themes facilitate the integration of language, content, and culture and promote the use of the language in a variety of contexts. The books that we were using in previous years are not useful anymore, because they are lacking depth and content around these themes. The books that I am requesting will provide the support that students need to reach these learning goals.

My project will make a difference because it will provide the tools to prepare the students to be successful in the AP exam.

As a result, they will earn credits/units when passing the exam with a grade mark of 3 or better. Many universities offer credits/units to those students who pass the AP exam. The students benefit by not taking certain classes in college. Which means that by passing the exam, they will be saving money and time when they go to college. But most importantly, it will change their lives because passing the AP exam shows them determination and hard work pay off at the end. I'm just trying to prepare them better so that they can be successful. I know that acquiring the material that I'm asking for will be a great advantage to my teaching as well as for my students.
