My Students

52 percent of public school students in California are Latino according to the California Department of Education. But a recent article in the New York Times reported that only 3 percent of children's books in 2011 were by Latina/o authors or about Latina/o protagonists.

This is a big problem, considering that my Latino students like to read and want books to speak to them.

My classroom library (now at 500 books) is pretty extensive and diverse. But there is usually only one copy of many popular books. That's just not enough when only about 75 of the titles are by or about Latinos. If a student finishes a book and knows the next one he wants to read, he shouldn't have to wait until his peer finishes the book. That leaves time to get unhooked from reading.

My Project

That is why I'm hoping that you will help purchase some of the most popular books that my Latino students request. These 11 books are never on my bookshelves; they're always in circulation. Once one gets returned, it immediately gets snatched up. If there were two copies, I could do a better job of saving the book for just the right person -- perhaps a student who is a reluctant reader or someone who needs a good story.

As you know, reading is very important, especially for students who will be the first in their family to go to college.

I am hopeful that you will join me in connecting good students with good books. Thank you very much for your support!
