My Students

How could a child be good at reading and writing without high quality books to read? A library doesn't have to be huge, as long as it contains worth-reading books. Our classroom library is lack of good books.

Our school is a Title I school in the northwest.

Most students are below the poverty line, with lack of resources at home and limited life experience comparing to their peers. Reading at school opens their eyes, globalizes them. Every year when I asked these first graders, "How many of you have been to a park?" "How many of you have been to a library?", their answers always made me feel sad, because a number of them have never been to a park and many of them don't go to library. They are smart children with great curiosity about the world and capacity in learning. They deserve the equal access to knowledge. Some adults should do that for them, provide them the access. I decided to build a good library in my class, with good books such as award-winning books. My paycheck could barely cover my family's basic needs and it will take me a long time to build our dream library, unless with help from our larger community -- donors like you.

My Project

I selected 74 award-winning books for this proposal. One step at a time. These books are written by famous authors. They are perfect for young readers. I checked out the reviews and they support the topics we learn about in class. For example: A Pill Bug's Life by John Himmelman, A Mexican Cinderella Story by Tomie DePaola, and so on. We learn about insects, food, fairy tales and more in first grade. I have two books by Tomie DePaola and my students liked them. When we get these books, I can use them for reading aloud, shared reading, or letting students read independently. I can use them as examples to teach a writing craft or a prompt for students to think of a writing topic. I can use them to build background knowledge when introducing a science or social science topic, such as a different culture or a different land. We will use these books all day, every day. Oh! I have so many ways to use them. My students will learn so much from high quality books.
