Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Please help our school library keep its most important patrons, the little kids, well-supplied with interesting, high quality books. That calls for a lot of books: ones that kids can read with their teachers and, more importantly, books that children can read at home with their moms and dads.

Why do these kids need your help?

Let me give you a few figures about our school. It's located in Miami Beach. Sounds glamorous and rich, right? Wrong! Over 80% of our children come from low-income households. And over 80% are first-generation Americans. Their parents tend to be immigrants from the Caribbean, or from Central / South America. They have low-paying jobs in local hotels / restaurants. These are the guys who make the beds / clean / work in the kitchen. Our kids live in economically struggling households. Few have access to books at home. Fewer still have access to books in English. Our moms and dads are usually too busy trying to get by to have the time to take their children to the public library, or to participate in the PTA. Our kids are wonderful, as kids are, and given the chance, they love to read. Our school library is crucially important in keeping them supplied with books. And the lifeblood of our school library is Donors Choose. We'd be lost without you guys.

My Project

The books that we're asking for are on Kindergarten and First Grade level. We have about a hundred kids in each grade at our school. Taking into account older kids who are reading below grade level, that means that this project will affect 250 - 300 students. The titles in this book collection all come recommended by the American Library Association. The books are especially tough and ready to circulate. They come from a company that specializes in supplying library books. That means that each volume has a strong binding that will give it an extra-long life, and each book comes barcoded. The company will e-mail us bibliographic information to go into our library computer, so that the books can be scanned at check-in / check-out. The moment they arrive in school, they'll be ready to check out to our kids, moms and dads.

Please help our magnificent kids!

They love to read, but most come from straitened circumstances and need help in getting their hands on good reading materials. And when it comes to trying to foster a love for reading, no kids are more important than the students in Kindergarten and First Grade. You know how the phrase goes: Get them while they're young! Let's do it! Let's keep these kids reading!
