Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This will be my ninth year as a classroom teacher! I have spent the past almost-decade in grades K-2, and am happily settled with my favorite age group – first graders. I am passionate about teaching these 6- and 7-year-olds who are so intelligent, curious, and full of possibility.

During the pandemic I have been teaching on Zoom and making videos.

It has been a challenge to connect with students from a distance, but reading aloud is always a hit.

My Project

About half of my students come from Latinx families. To celebrate their heritage, I plan read books about icons such as Roberto Clemente, Sonia Sotomayor, Celia Cruz, and more (check out my book list below!). We will also be reading joyful fiction featuring Latinx characters, because my students deserve to see themselves reflected in all kinds of texts.

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15-October 15, but we will be honoring our Latinx students all year long.

These books will be cherished by my Hispanic students and their peers from other cultures.
