Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

So often, students begin the year with "I hate math." Most children don't actually hate math, they hate the struggle. In my geometry class I strive to provide my students with various ways to learn and show their knowledge so that they become confident in their math skills and no longer "hate math."

My special needs students come into class eager to learn.

While their learning abilities make it difficult for them to fully comprehend the content and skills required to succeed, they strive to put in the necessary work to do well in class and eventually pass the big Common Core Regents exam at the end of the year. Because of the emphasis put on one year-end exam, even those who do know the material sometimes suffer from test-taking anxiety. The anxiety and struggle are compounded because of the students' disabilities and create a cycle that makes it a challenge for them to engage in much of the work, let alone comprehend it. My students lack the resources to practice their geometry regularly and lack the resources to provide them with various methods and levels of learning.

My Project

Over the course of the year, my students will utilize a class set of the workbooks to practice their geometry skills collaboratively and independently. As they practice, they will become more confident with the new Common Core Geometry standards and succeed on their Regents exam. Additionally, the various other books will provide the class with hands-on projects that will engage and provide for the various students in my class. Some students will be engaged because of the activities that engage different types of learners, like those who learn kinesthetically or visually. Other students will build confidence as some activities are differentiated based on grade level. The students who struggle with grade-level material can build their way up with scaffolded activities. The accelerated students can begin right on grade level or try more challenging activities.

With your donations, my students will build on their geometry skills and deeply comprehend the content in a way that they have not yet been able to do.

With such a high emphasis placed on testing, my students deserve to go into an exam with confidence, knowing that they can excel if only given the proper tools to do so.
