This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a kindergarten special education teacher in a 12:1 self-contained Title I school in the Bronx. The children in my classroom have different levels of academic, communication, social, and independent functioning skills. They are all very special and they each have their own strengths as well as areas that present more difficulty for them. My students are able to learn many of the same things as students in the general education classroom setting, but they simply require specialized instructional strategies, repetition of information, sensory-based activities, assistance in communicating, etc. I love teaching them because every day is different.

My Project

The students in my class are on different levels when it comes to reading. Some of them are still in the process of learning how to identify the letters of the alphabet and their corresponding sounds while others are about to begin their journey into reading. Unfortunately, we do not have any books in our classroom to support their learning. Currently, the books we have in our classroom are for children that are already reading. It is very difficult to teach children to respect books and use them properly if they do not have books to support their level. All children, whether they can read or not, should be given the opportunity to be exposed to books. It is important that we receive these books so that my students begin to understand the importance of how to respect books and use books properly.
