Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our small Title 1 school sits at the base of the Manhattan Bridge, hidden among the ever-growing collection of luxury high rises overtaking Brooklyn's Flatbush Avenue.

My students are all recently arrived newcomers who have lived in the United States for less than 4 years and come from a wide variety of countries such as Guatemala, Haiti, Senegal, and Yemen.

As students work together on a project, you might hear them discussing in a variety of languages such as Haitian Creole, French, Arabic, Spanish, or Wolof. We see this diversity as an incredible opportunity, but one that sometimes needs additional support beyond what our public school budget can offer.

My Project

Students are motivated to be digging into novels about experiences that are similar to their own, but for some of our newer English language learners, some additional supports are helpful for them as they take on the challenge of reading a full-length English novel and/or non-fiction book.

We are building a library of accessible books and audio books to encourage our developing language learners to persevere through these deeper social topics and reading challenges.

As a learning community we have seen an increased need within our student population to discuss topics like poverty, abuse, addiction, consent, and mental health more deeply and more often. Our hope is that through the experiences of the characters and people in these books students might be able to come together and have more honest discussions that lead to a more personal understanding of how they might react/respond in their futures to best support themselves and the people around them.
