Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While there's a dearth of materials for elementary level learners, it's difficult to find materials for high school students who are new to the country.

My high school English Learners have been in the country for less than three years.

They learn English quickly and attend all classes in English. Sometimes they just need a chapter book at a lower level reading, to feel successful at reading a longer book that's not filled with pictures of children younger than they.

My Project

My favorite series growing up was the Bunnicula series about a dog named Harold, a cat Chester, and their mysterious new housemate, a vampire bunny. The high school students can identify with the book, as the book is narrated by Harold. They love the humor and charm that is present in the original version and transfers to the easy readers. The House on Mango Street is for higher level students, but is equally engaging.

It's difficult to find books to get kids reading longer pieces and develop a reading habit that follows them through to adulthood.

I hope these books will help make that transition and create a culture of fun in reading.
