My Students

My second graders are voracious readers! They love to read both fiction and nonfiction books. Their favorite characters include Pete the Cat, Fly Guy, Piggie and Elephant, and Mercy Watson. They also love to read about insects, space, and plants. My students are hungry bookworms! They are eager to learn and read about the world around them. My class is made up of general education students, children with special needs, and English as new language students.

My students love to be at school and are like little sponges, absorbing everything around them.

Their parents work long hours and usually do not see their children. The children are usually cared for by their grandparents or a family friend. Most of them do not have someone who speaks English at home. Thus, it is difficult for students to acquire the English language.

Due to financial hardships, my students do not have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities during the school year or summer.

My Project

In reading and writing workshops, my second graders are reading and writing nonfiction in remote learning. Having books to refer to as a mentor text in reading and writing will support my students' learning.

In distance learning, my second graders do not easily have access to the books they would use in the classroom.

I would like my students to read the nonfiction book series: Fly Guy Presents by Tedd Arnold and learn how the author brings nonfiction to life with humorous illustrations and engaging photographs throughout his books. In reading, students will learn to use nonfiction features such as text boxes, captions, glossaries, headings, diagrams, maps, and photos to help them with comprehension. In writing workshop, students will study how the nonfiction author, Tedd Arnold, hooks the readers, includes super cool facts, gives examples, makes comparisons, and adds descriptions to engage the reader. Afterwards, students will then write about their own nonfiction topic using the comic book templates.
