Books for Critical, Reflective Readers

Help me give my students a quality, diverse library. As Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop has said, readers need books that are both windows and mirrors.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach 22 wonderful, brilliant, empathetic second graders at a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They are energetic, funny, and curious. They want a library that will not only deepen their thinking but also provide insight into others' experiences as well as reflections of their own experiences.

Second graders have a keen sense of justice, and they want to engage with the world around them in real ways.

This project is one of many efforts that our classroom is making to ensure we have quality books that are representative of the diverse world we live in.

My Project

Second graders are astute observers. They notice whose voices are present and whose voices are missing, as well as the power dynamics that accompany that reality. With a rich library, students will have more perspectives and stories to learn from and question.

We are living in a time with incredible literature for children, and my students are eager to read books as both windows and mirrors.

By donating to our project, you will provide books that will bolster our readerly lives and provide more context for the complex world we live in. Our students will bring their criticality, joy, and reflection to these books, and our entire learning community will grow because of it.
