Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at my school are amazing human beings! They are inquisitive, passionate, and hard-working. They are caring, empathetic, and capable. They are hands-on learners, eager to take on challenges!

Our students are kind and curious learners who constantly exploring how to become advocates and activists as they learn about various social issues through the lens of justice, humanity, and sustainability.

They are future community members, teachers, and leaders. These students can and will make a difference in the community, lives of others, and world.

These students are from East Los Angeles. Our school is a Title I school with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-rate lunch. The school is rich in culture, community, love, and support. Unfortunately, sometimes it is hard to get my hands on all the materials and resources I would like for classrooms, the school, and students.

My Project

Speaking about diversity, race, racism, and how to advocate for change with young children is so critical. It is never too young to have these conversations with kids!

Children's books are one of the most powerful tools in initiating critical conversations about diversity, race, racism, oppression, social justice, and activism.

These books can help teachers open up a space for these conversations, explore questions students have, and encourage reflection in their classrooms. Furthermore, these conversations will empower our students to reflect on what they can do as advocates and allies, and how they might fight for social justice and change in their communities and world.

This project will fund a collection of books that cover issues of diversity, race, and racial injustices. More importantly, books in this project focus on taking action by modeling how to respond to racial injustice with resistance, resilience, and activism.

This book collection is for all teachers at my school to have access to for use with their students. Teachers will be able to use these as virtual read aloud books for the remainder of this year, and during our summer school program. Next year, teachers will be able to get their hands on these books and check them out for use in their classrooms.
