Books for Change: Promoting Literacy & Wellness in Our Community
Help me give my students a diverse collection of books to distribute in our community, promoting literacy, critical thinking, and wellness by providing access to important stories and knowledge.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am constantly inspired by my students’ passion for learning and their eagerness to make a positive impact through community service. These students are driven, thoughtful, and ready to engage in meaningful projects beyond the classroom to support literacy and wellness in our neighborhood and surrounding area.
With this project, my students will lead a community service initiative focused on increasing literacy in our community.
They will organize a book drive and outreach event to distribute books to needy families, including residents in our East Las Vegas community. Students will take the lead in planning and hosting a literacy pop-up event at our school, where they will set up book stations and engage families in literacy-based games and wellness activities. They will also create flyers and social media posts to promote the event, ensuring that it reaches a wide and diverse audience.
The books we are requesting, such as Animal Farm, Persepolis, and A People’s History of the United States, represent diverse voices and histories that my students will read, reflect on, and then share with others in the broader community. These texts will not only deepen their understanding and empathy but also serve as meaningful tools they can pass on to promote education and critical thinking in others.
This community service project will help students build leadership, communication, and event-planning skills while also fostering a sense of civic responsibility. Most importantly, it will allow them to contribute to a culture of literacy that benefits our larger community—beyond just our classroom or school. By supporting this initiative, you are empowering students to lead with purpose, promote literacy in underserved areas, and build stronger, more connected communities through the power of reading.
