Books for Brooklyn

My students need high interest and engaging books. This year in particular, many of my students have requested graphic novels. Graphic novels are a great way to grab reluctant readers' attention.

My Students

I work at a small all girls high school in downtown Brooklyn. I call my students "my girls" because there is a special bond that we have at our small school. Most of the students at my school receive free or reduced lunch and struggle with reading.

Despite being struggling readers, my students love learning!

They love a good story and are intrigued by the world. Everyday students engage in silent reading. Therefore, it is imperative that the classroom has a high interest and plentiful library. I am creating this project on the behalf of my students to ensure they stay engaged in reading and grow as learners.

My Project

These books will ignite a love of reading in my students. Students will engage in book clubs to discuss stories and to make connections to relevant themes and to the world beyond the classroom. Students will be able to work on social emotional learning by reading these books with partners and in small groups. I know that if my students have a "good" book in their hands they will learn to appreciate reading and understand how reading enhances life. My goal is to get each of my students excited about reading and understand its importance in life. These high interest books will do exactly that!
