This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Bronx-based students are learning to love reading! They have not always had the best relationship with reading, and some came to my 6th grade special education English class absolutely hating books. To combat this, I've built in silent reading time each day. During this time, the kids are encouraged to find a comfy spot and relax with a good book. This has been super successful--they come up from lunch excited to read and it has become an important part of our routine. However, we have read through all of the books in our classroom!!!

To continue encouraging my students to further develop their lifelong love of reading, we need more books in our classroom.

They cannot get enough of reading graphic novels and I would love to provide them with more! A big roadblock with reading is often kids not being interested in the content or books being too challenging and them reaching their frustration levels too quickly. Graphic novels might seem "simple" but they're actually super accessible tools to get students to read more! The pictures help them follow the story and they don't feel overwhelmed by too much text.

As a special education teacher, I always try to think of ways to encourage learning and especially reading in my classroom. My students read far below grade level, and encouraging a love for reading is usually difficult. Having a large selection of new books, especially graphic novels, will help my students fall in love with their new favorite book!
