This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I have the honor and privilege of teaching honors and AP English students at our school. These are 10th-12th graders who often times have not been challenged enough in their English education.

If I had to sum up one goal for myself as an English teacher, it would be to foster a love and appreciation for reading in every student.

This is no simple task in the age of smart phones and AI, however it is a task that I believe in wholeheartedly. It is so important, that we have dedicated reading time every week in my class.

This may be multiple days with fifteen minute reading sessions, or one to two days a week of thirty minute reading sessions.

Setting a standard for silent reading time at the beginning of the year has been the best thing I've ever done. As it is now April, my students know what is expected and they actually read when I ask them to!

This is a standard that I want to set in future years. Having a classroom library in addition to the school library will give students access to more books and hopefully encourage and excite them for reading time!
