Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My project is dedicated to enhancing literacy and fostering a love for reading among 6th graders. As an English teacher, I've observed firsthand the impact that engaging and diverse books can have on young learners. Many students lack access to a wide range of books that capture their interests and encourage not only grade-level literacy, but a lifelong love of reading. My school lacks a media center/library and thus it is even more difficult for my students to find books at their reading level that interest them.
When students are given access to books that pique their interest, literacy benchmarks, class participation, reading comprehension skills, and overall willingness to read are all boosted.
After the implementation of a reading log in my classes, it became clear to me that many students struggle with developing important reading comprehension skills because they do not have access to the broad range of genres required to stimulate their growing minds.
Better books are the gateway to building better readers. I know that my students, their parents, and I will love the books that we receive through this campaign.
