Each year, I look for new and creative ways to engage students in finding independent books they enjoy. I know this is vital to their growth as a student and as a reader. Reading is a life skill that needs to be fostered and encouraged, especially in the elementary grades! One way that I encourage reading is through the use of book talks--basically, a commercial for great books that a 5th grader might not pick up on their own!
My hope is to begin a weekly Book Talk Thursday where I introduce students to new a text and then complete a drawing for which student gets to be the first to read the new title!
I'm hoping that with creative and engaging techniques such as this, students will be more excited to pick up books they wouldn't normally choose for themselves. I've compiled a list of favorites that I do not have in my library currently! Thank you for your support with this project!
