This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
We are embracing reading for fun, reading for pure joy. During the pandemic, many students became isolated from their peers. Although we have returned to the physical building, students continue to deal with various issues related to COVID. To help students decrease their isolation during lunch we have begun to host quarterly Book-nic events. This fun event invites students and faculty to bring their favorite books, a blanket and their lunch to the courtyard during their designated lunch period.
Book-nic provides an opportunity for students to share a book as they eat, connect, and chat with other students and members of the faculty.
During this time, students can make new friends and discover new books to read. Funding from this project would allow me to give students relevant coming-of-age stories for them to read and share with other students at future Book-nic events. The books selected for this grant are all recommendations from our current book club members.
