Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing. Most of them have been at the school since kindergarten and our school is special because we can really develop a close relationship with each individual student as they grow up.

As a school with a bilingual program, students are immersed in rigorous instruction in both English and Spanish.

There are numerous benefits to being bilingual, and students work very hard to access the curriculum despite it being a challenge. We have both Spanish-dominant and English-dominant speakers, which means that one hundred percent of our students are second language learners.

My Project

It's not always easy finding texts that engage my students in Spanish. My students should be able to have access to texts in Spanish that they want to read. They get excited about reading in English and should feel the same about reading in Spanish since the majority of them have been in a bilingual environment since at least kindergarten.

Most libraries have a wide variety in English, yet do not supply the same amount of choices in Spanish.

Since students do not have the same access, the goal is to fulfill this need in my classroom. All the books have at least 2 copies, in case they want to read the same book as a friend which can make the experience more engaging for them.
