Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious and inquisitive seventh and eighth graders at a Title I public school in West Michigan. I see each of them each day for Social Studies, and they are so passionate about learning about the world around them. We work every day to expand our worldview and our understanding of world history so that we can understand how our history impacts our lives today and in the future.

As a first-generation high-school and college graduate, I use stories from my own life and experiences to relate to my scholars.

Our classroom is a peaceful place where we work to meet the needs of every scholar. One of their favorite things to do once their work is done is to read silently. I'd love to have some bookshelves for my room so I can start to build a classroom library. For this reason, I have selected two bookshelves to get us started toward that goal.

In addition, I'd love to fill the bookshelves with some engaging, approachable books for my scholars. With so many different reading levels present, it is critically important that the classroom library reflects each of those reading levels.

In a diverse classroom, diverse book choices including characters of all cultures, races, and abilities help every scholar feel included. Therefore, when choosing books for this project, I intentionally chose titles that included characters representative of the cultures, races, and abilities present in my classroom. Inclusion is so, so important and when students feel included, they can be better set up for classroom success.

To build this representative and inclusive library, I've chosen a variety of books including Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Skyward, Twisted Tales (retold fairy tales and classic stories), and more. I know they'll all be instant favorites for my scholars!
