My Students

My students are immersed in a reading and writing program that affords them the opportunity to read a lot of personally chosen books. I work with many voracious readers... but some are a bit more reluctant either based on their reading level or their other interests.

Like Rowling once said, "If you don't like to read, you haven't found the right book." Sometimes kids need to connect their reading to their interests.

Other times, kids just need more time for their reading skills to develop so they're hesitant to pick books that might be looked at as immature. In both cases, I just need the right books to get them excited to read!

My Project

These books will be used for students to use with our reading program, Units of Study. Since students are able to choose all of their own novels, it is really important to have books in all different genres to keep their interest.

The more you read, the better you become as a reader.

One thing that makes this project exciting is that it includes multiple book sets. It's great to get momentum in a series so that kids have no downtime between books. The common link of animals will help students be able to read through one series and then swiftly move to another animal series.

Fifth-grade reading expands from having a theme in one book to applying that theme to others...all of these will help students to make connections between texts.
