Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a Special Education teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are constantly facing challenges both in and out of school. Many of them are being raised in single parent households/shelters, by grandparents, or foster parents. They receive a free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Even with the many challenges they face, my ultimate goal is to keep things as simple as possible and provide my students with resourceful and significant learning experiences.

My students are a good "different"; They have emotions like me and all come in wanting to learn.

My 3 classes consist of students with a range of disabilities/needs, which include autism, emotional disturbance, intellectual disabilities, English Language Learners, speech & language/hearing impairment and other learning disabilities. Some of the students in my classes read up to 2 to 3 grade levels below their actual grade level (based on F&P). These students are our future and I would like to give them a great launch to their successful career full of many experiences and opportunities!

My Project

We simply love to read! Every day we take the time to Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R). We have designated 5-10 minutes per day to work on independent reading skills. During this time, we focus on practicing the reading skills we have been learning in the classroom. In addition, we read when we finish our class assignments early.

We would greatly benefit from having access to more books that are on our levels!

We would appreciate it if you can please assist us in obtaining some new books that are the appropriate levels for our students!
