My Students

My scholars are tomorrow's leaders who will change the world. Driven by obtaining a rich education, every morning my students answer the question, "How are you doing today?" with the response, "Hungry for knowledge to get me to college."

When I think of resilience, I think of my students.

When I think of determination, I think of my students. When I think of love, kindness, growth, and desire, I think of my students.

Although my students face obstacles in their daily lives from the reality of living in a large urban city that has been plagued by decades of segregation, my students are the future of Chicago, the future of the United States, and the future of our world. They deserve an excellent education—with resources to help encourage lifelong learning—so that they can actively work towards their goals of making a difference.

My Project

The books donated to my students will help implement a classroom library check-out system for students to expand their love of learning and reading. Our school does not have a library where students are able to check out books. As a student who grew up loving library check out days, I know how valuable it can be to be able to take various books home to share with family members and to then be able to return it the next day and pick out a new book! This cycle is a beautiful representation of the power that books can have on a child's life, and I want to be able to offer this experience to my students.

The library that I wish to create in my classroom will be founded upon our values of kindness, diversity, and responsibility.

Students will be able to check out one book at a time and take it home. They will learn how to be responsible for the materials and ensure that the book gets back in a timely manner so that their friends can read it next. Many students in my class do not have access to endless books, so this library system will allow them to tangibly hold a book in their hands and share the wonders of reading with their loved ones.

Additionally, the library will be a haven for culturally relevant books that represent my students' identities, as well as their interests. It is important to me that my students see themselves represented in the texts they are reading by making meaningful connections with the characters. The diverse texts will encourage students to share these stories with their families, which will ultimately build excitement and love around reading.
