Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 6th-8th grade Life Skills students may be described as reluctant readers. That said, they regularly talk about one of the book selections that we read as a class last year. When I asked students about incentives that they would appreciate during our virtual learning period, they asked for specific favorite books as rewards for commendable behavior and classwork. Some of the students who made these requests are more than reluctant readers. They are struggling readers who, nonetheless, look forward to holding a special book in their hands! That book that they want is more than a collection of words. It is a tangible experience of a time that we spent as a class and created positive memories together through reading. These are sustaining memories for my students. We have not been in a class together since mid March 2019.

Most of my students have pets at home so books about animals are especially important to them.

Other books of interest to my students are biographies that help them understand history and the world through the eyes of a person who experienced a particular era. Thank you from all of us for your support of my students and their reading.

My Project

Our school has been on a virtual format since mid March 2020. I am unable to predict when we will be able to return to the building but that's exactly where my students want to be. My students are requesting books as rewards for accumulating positive classroom credits. The three classroom sets of books that are listed here will enable my students to have the books that will be used in upcoming read alouds.

When students have their own copy of a book, they have spontaneously volunteered to read to the entire class.

This project will assure that each student in the class has the book in their hands and has the opportunity to read along with the rest of us.
