Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school students are curious and hungry for new experiences. They express interest in getting to know the world around them. They are aware of their limited world experience and are eager for resources. They love to know that they are cared about. Many of them need that extra push to reach their full potential. My students express interest in new, fun, exciting, best-selling books that they hear about, but don't have access to.

Unfortunately, many of my students confide that they don't get many worldly experiences through adventures in books, much less adventures in real life because very few of my students have access to books at home.

I have had the parents of struggling readers inform me that their child does not have access to books at home, and so not much can be done to help them improve their lexile level at home. The desire to read and learn is there. They are eager to devour popular books that will allow them to join the conversation with other kids.

My Project

My students, which include many reluctant readers, are motivated to read by having access to interesting, contemporary, popular books of the moment that they tend to hear a lot about, but don't have access to. At our title 1 school in San Diego, we don't have access to many books. Our library is only open once a week due to budget issues. In addition, the choices in our school library are limited because of the meager selection and because the books are out of date. In an effort to promote literacy at my school given the difficult circumstances, I have made it a goal to build a robust classroom library that not only with provide access to books to the students in my classroom, but to students at my school who are not in my classes as well.

I have recently asked all five of my 8th grade classes to complete book recommendation forms in which they list the books they would love to see in our classroom.

I asked them to consider titles of books that would send them into a frenzy of pure excitement when grabbing them off of the shelf during our independent reading time, and this project is the result of those lists my students compiled.

My students were so excited about the prospect of getting to select specific titles, and their eyes lit up with possibility as they brainstormed titles they are eager to read. They could not stop sharing ideas and talking about which books they prefer. From popular collections such as The Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series, to popular books that raise questions about social justice such as "All American Boys," my students are thirsty for these popular, contemporary titles.
