My Students

Our school serves a large population of bilingual students who are acquiring skills in English at school while also developing their literacy in another language at home. As emergent bilinguals, these students are not only learning all of the content that their peers are learning, but they are also doing so while code-switching between two or more languages.

These students represent an incredibly diverse group of cultures and languages, and we feel that honoring and celebrating this diversity within our school is crucial.

My Project

Our school does not have its own library, so teachers are in charge of providing their own books for class read alouds and lessons. This collection of books celebrating bilingualism and diversity will serve as a valuable resource not only when working with our groups of emerging bilingual students, but also when working with our homeroom classes.

By celebrating bilingualism and diversity with our students, we can help all of them become more respectful and compassionate people.

These books also provide an opportunity for us to learn about other languages and cultures. The books will be available to all teachers in our elementary school, allowing them to reach as many of our students as possible.
