My Students

Seventh graders need books with characters with personalities they can relate to, dealing with issues they can understand. My students do their best reading work when they can speak about characters as if they were friends!

My students are often reluctant, below-grade-level readers.

Many of them have special education needs, and some are former English language learners. But they all love to hear a good story (who doesn't?) and perform best when the materials are both engaging and challenging. Engagement keeps them wanting to know more. Students rise to the challenge - of taking apart characters and analyzing author's craft - when they care about the materials presented to them.

My Project

"Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie" will be used to teach character analysis, perspective, and author's craft. We'll experience the world of the story together. Students will be able to discuss how people respond to tragedy, and how our responses affect the choices we make and those around us. They'll be able to think about how sometimes we say one thing but mean - or hope for - another. And lastly, they will think about why the truth of the matter is sometimes so difficult to admit. The story is rich with life lessons, realizations, and humor. Later in the year, students will use parts of the story to model their own writing after.

Children hold on to important lessons, and they remember where they learned those lessons from.

Some of the important lessons from "Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie" are, of course, about reading and writing. But the other lessons are about patience, understanding, and change.
