Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students have not been outside of the city of Los Angeles, California; this makes studying Ancient Civilizations abstract and hard to relate to.

The majority of my students come from non-native English speaking families in the high poverty areas of Los Angeles, California.

They are sixth grade students in a charter school that pushes and expects them to succeed, and ultimately attend college.

My Project

One of the things that I have noticed after teaching Ancient Civilizations to students, is that they respond very well to outside supplemental books that present information on the same areas they are studying in their textbooks. My desire is to be able to present them with as many learning opportunities within my classroom as possible. Having these books in my classroom library, will help to foster the love of learning that comes from opening and enjoying a great book. Our school does not have a centralized library, nor is it safe for my students to go to their neighborhood libraries. With these books in our classroom library, the students will be able to create and complete individual projects based on any current unit of study. These projects help to bring the outside world to our classroom.

My students love books, and with your help, will have a greater selection to choose from within our classroom library.

One book, and their exposure to new ideas and images, can make the difference in a student's attitude towards learning.
