Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school has been labeled "under-performing" but that is simply not true: we are simply under-resourced. My students have limited access to the most popular books for teens because we share classroom space and a Media Center with two other schools.

My students are a diverse group of ninth graders from various parts of our urban metropolis.

In one class I have up to twelve different nationalities represented! What is truly inspiring about my students is the high level of acceptance they exhibit for each other's languages, dress, and culture. In just the first week of school, I have seen friendships form, struggling students receive assistance from peers without asking for it, and quiet students emerge from their protective shells to bravely share in their small groups. Such compassion, insight, and risk-taking in my young adults is more than encouraging--this is an ideal setting for growth and change.

My Project

I bet I can get students to "walk each other to the stacks," as Jonathan Kozol indicated is needed when you have nonreaders -- and I do. Students, especially nonreaders, who do not have adults discussing and sharing books with them need to be guided into the world of books, into the joy of reading. In each class, I have a pocket of non-readers and I know that those who have already fallen in love with books can help me entice their peers to read. To complement their study of mythology and the hero's journey, my teen readers suggested I purchase a few copies each of their favorite teen fantasy novels: The Book Thief, The Selection, The Mortal Instruments, The Host, Steelheart, Divergent, The Maze Runner, Michael Vey. With these books, we will begin to build our classroom library.

The English classroom is a place for many things, but to help teens fall in love with reading is always at the top of my list.

My dream is to create a library that is managed by students as readers beget more readers!
