Books Build Bridges: Celebrating Diversity & Who We Are

Help me give my students book club & classroom library selections that reflect their unique differences and the best of themselves, while allowing them to discuss the lessons we can learn from each other.

My Students

My students walk into my classroom ready to learn, try new things, and empower each other every day. I teach the most amazing group of young people from all different backgrounds. Each day my students amaze me with their talents, their strengths, and their grit. Our school community features many different types of learners who have many unique needs and talents, a range of socio-economic backgrounds, and come from a variety of culture groups.

When teaching such a diverse group of learners with such a wide range of abilities, it becomes essential to provide them with the tools they need in order to reach their full potential, and ones that allow them to see themselves represented in the world.

My Project

I always tell my students that reading is important because it makes us better people. It changes our hearts. We learn to put ourselves in someone else's shoes. The books in this project will make a tremendous difference in my students' learning. Representation is so important in a child's curriculum. I want to update my classroom library and book club selections so that all of my students can find themselves reflected within the pages that they read.

My students will see a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences represented on the pages of these books.

In book clubs, students will be able to read and discuss books at their own level and consider the experiences that shape their characters and make them who they are. My classroom library will also be upgraded so that students can find more diverse selections of books to read that feature kids like them, and open their minds to new types of people. My classroom library has been recently cataloged online, and a scanner will make it so much easier for my students to access and locate books about topics and characters that they are interested in.

All of the books in this project are centered around themes that remind the reader that people are more than meets the eye. Year after year, students in my classroom will grow to understand the importance of accepting and celebrating the differences in our friends and neighbors, and that they should always be true to themselves.
