Help Mrs. Deraps

I teach English to students who are considered to be at-risk. This means that they are likely to drop out of high school without some sort of extra support and/ or guidance. Most of my students are boys. These boys come from a variety of home situations, but are mostly poor and have little hope for college unless they find a reason to stay in school and get excited about learning.

I have implemented a Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) program in my classroom for the past two years. Most of my students, and particularly male students, would not have classified themselves as readers before starting this program. I know that independent reading will lead to a love of and excitement for learning, so I need to keep these boys reading if I want them to have a shot at completing high school and entering a technical or four-year college. Most of my male students do not read for pleasure and then have trouble when asked to complete assigned readings. I worry that this lack of reading skill will prevent them from being successful readers post-high school. For some of these boys, these independent reading novels are the first books they've ever read by themselves. This saddens me, but I know that we can turn this around by getting high-interest reading materials into their hands!

Due to a lack of resources and an overwhelming excitement about this new independent reading program, my male students have are running out of books to read! I find that my female students will read just about anything, but that boys need a strong male protagonist and a gripping plot line to keep their interest. Recently, I asked my male students to generate a list of books and/or subjects they'd like to read about, and I came up with the list of books in this plea for help. Most told me that they love reading about war, sports, the environment, and inner-city life. A few enjoy science fiction, so I've included a couple of those titles here as well.

Your help will ensure that my male students continue their investment and interest in reading. I don't know whether or not this interest will carry over to their adult lives, but I can tell you that their excitement about reading is like nothing I've ever seen before. I feel like I've gotten them reading regularly and feeling good about reading, but now I've run out of books for them to choose from. Please help!
