My Students

My students are the reason I got into this field. I work in a "tough area" so most people make assumptions about my students, but they could not be more wrong. My students, or as I like to call them, my children, are often stereotyped because of their background, neighborhood or classification and every year we try to prove everyone wrong. This year alone they brought me to tears with all they accomplished.

I don't have 13 students; I have 13 children.

This is what I tell people when asked if I have children and what in turn tell my students. These kids come in to school ready to learn because we work together to make our classroom as fun as possible. However, we are a Title one school and most of our students come in early to eat a good breakfast and stay late at after school programs; our school becomes a second home to them. Therefore, because they enter into a second home when they enter my classroom I want them to have everything they need to succeed, because they are special and deserve the best. Every child has the ability to change the world.

My Project

My students are in my self contained class and while that in no way diminishes their capabilities they do tend to have to play catch up in third grade. A lot of my students are reading below their grade level, and the requested guided reading fiction and nonfiction books will help them to keep improving and becoming better readers. When it is time to read independently, they need to have books on their level so this action is possible.

Sometimes students hate reading because it has been so challenging or their books have been boring; with the right books and books on their level I think we can make real strides!

I want them to be as independent as possible and be proud of their accomplishments.
