Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Second grade is a second chance to learn how to fall in love with all kinds of books. Long books, short books, silly books, serious books, classic books, and books written by us...we want them all! We crave captivating books that intrigue us, teach us, and are simply enjoyable!

Many children in our class grow up in a bilingual home and bring limited English to the classroom.

In addition, many of the children in our ICT classroom struggle with learning disabilities that make it even more difficult to learn how to read. School is their escape, it's their paradise. Each time the lively pictures jump off the pages of our books, the children's eyes light up and they are eager to learn more! Unfortunately, our school's budget has been dwindling and books have been cut. We have been left to staple together missing pages and torn books in our effort to learn how to read. We would love to read new books with colorful pages, as well as create our own lasting stories and adventures!

My Project

It would be a dream to have students open up books that are not just full of color and life, but to also have "just right" words and concepts on each page. With this student population, it is even more difficult to find students that come to school with vocabulary skills and letter/sound knowledge. It is with books that they are able to build up their foundational skills and potential. The children would also be able to create their own books to present and share with the class! They will also create new chapters and prequels to some of their favorite stories to add to our growing collection of favorite books! It is critical for students to read these books at school and to borrow them for rereading at home. We could also use these books in small group instruction and whole class read aloud!

We want to learn, grow, and read!

We want to enjoy books, pictures, words, and ideas. These colorful fiction and nonfiction books as well as materials to create our own books will foster our learning and make us lifelong lovers of reading. After all, isn't that what second grade is all about?!
