Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have always said that in first grade, children come in knowing the alphabet, and need to leave reading chapter books. That's a big task. Add in the linguistic, economic and social constraints facing my students, and the job at times feels impossible.

I work in Boston, in one of the original Turnaround schools, which were identified 3 years ago as "underperforming." Since that time, we are in a mad dash to bring up "student achievement" (as is measured by state test scores) and get all students to the highest level of proficiency possible.

Our student population is predominantly 2nd generation immigrant families, 85% non-English speaking, 94% below the poverty line, with a high occurrence of single families, homelessness and other social challenges. With all of these extra factors affecting students achievement, it is essential that I find as many ways as possible to help children learn to read.

My Project

To help children learn to read, we need lots of books at their reading level. These books can be read in their individual browsing boxes at school, or borrowed to be read at home with their families. These books are carefully leveled to match student performance, and provide the best kind of linguistic and conceptual support for struggling readers.

Though my students are already making wonderful progress, we still need to push to assure all students reach benchmarks by June.

Every little bit helps. The more ways I can provide opportunities to read, the greater the chances that each student will find his/her own way to engage with books, and learn to love to read!
