Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This summer I read The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. Her book discusses how to get kids to love to read again. In essence it is reading during school, having discussions, about books, and recommending to each other books they have enjoyed. I want to create this love of reading back into my classroom.

I plan on emerging kids in books.

I want them to have a range of book levels and a wide variety of genres to choose from. I searched for some titles that are up for awards this year as well as books I know my kids already can't get enough of. My students love the Who Was Series. I have every one they have ever made. Kids love reading these because they are not difficult and they can feel success in completing a book. Another series I have found is the Science Comic Series. I have a good selection of these books but I wanted to add some new titles since some of my students have me for more than one year. This led me to a new series called History Comics. There are only a few of these titles and I thought my students would enjoy reading about history in comic book form.

Most of my students are living in poverty. Many come from countries where education was not important. I want them to realize that reading is fun and not just something they do at school.
