Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am an ESL teacher who also helps to run my school's GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance). While I've slowly built a classroom library through used bookstores and free libraries, I am still lacking books in Spanish, anything in Russian, and queer books.

With these books, I will start an independent reading routine in my class and give my LGBT students reading options that reflect their identities.

My ESL students will be able to start by reading books in their home language, which will build reading skills they can use when reading in English. I will be able to provide reading material for my GSA. Students who may not be able to seek out books that reflect their identities outside of school will get that opportunity in my classroom. These books will support my students' academic skills as well as their social-emotional well-being.
