My Students

My elementary-age special education students inspire me on a daily basis to think and learn differently, and to focus on always creating a learning environment that helps them thrive. They are each individually unique in their strengths and needs, and together make up a classroom of thoughtful, creative, and able students. In our classroom, we focus on developing meaningful goals together and identify the steps we need to take in order to reach them.

Many of my students have literacy needs that must be met throughout the school day in order for them to be as successful as they can be across content areas.

They require support to further develop their phonics skills to improve their reading and writing. Often, books they are interested in are too difficult for them to access on their own. They need high interest-low level books to assist them in continuing to learn, grow, and to boost their confidence!

My Project

My students need highly interesting books with age-appropriate content at their current reading levels to keep them engaged and learning. During the school day, I see a variety of readers, working on skills, strategies, and behaviors to help them improve and grow. My biggest challenge in providing reading intervention to students is in finding texts appropriate for them that also help them access their classroom reading lessons. I noticed that the books that aligned with their classroom curriculum were too challenging, and the books that aligned with their current skills and behaviors as readers were academically/socially to young for them. I want my students to feel confident and excited about reading books made for kids just like them!
