My Students

Reading is a priority in our ELA classroom. Students devour their books; they are carried in their backpacks, read throughout the day whenever they have a moment to spare. To keep this love of reading going, students need to have constant access to current, beloved titles that interest them.

My students come from low income communities of New York City.

Each day, these kids experience a multitude of obstacles that many of us couldn't even fathom. Yet every day, they come to school. Despite their issues, my students try their best and work hard. They put in the effort they need to in order to change and empower their own futures. While these students can put in all the effort they can muster, they need equal access to materials to help them achieve their life-changing goals. One way we can do this is by supplying these students with reading material.

My Project

These books will help ignite a passion for reading in my students. While they have the drive and the interest in reading, we are missing books that match their interests and their reading levels. Each day we start class with a period of independent reading. It is proven that authentic reading helps students increase their vocabulary, knowledge of grammar, and acquisition of other cultures and materials. More importantly, reading of authentic novels helps to create lifelong readers out of all students. It shows that reading goes beyond any test that they are measure against. It shows students that reading is a lifelong skill that is important for their futures; that reading allows them access to an imagination to help them escape from their current situations and dream of a better future.

Reading is the fundamental skill that students need be a functioning member of society.

What's more important, though, is for adolescents to learn to love reading: to want to read a story, rather than see the movie; to read before bed, instead of watching TV; to carry a book with them on the train, instead of a pair of headphones. Supplying these students with high interest books at individual reading levels will help encourage and develop the love of reading in these students.
