My Students

A class that truly represents Brooklyn, my students are from a mix of cultures. Not only that, but my families chose to enroll their children in a dual language program. They are all committed to being bilingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English (some of the speak other languages as well).

My students are enthusiastic, curious, and caring, and truly delightful!

They check in with each other and treat each other with respect. Each day, they come to school ready to learn.

My Project

A well stocked classroom is critical to getting (and keeping) kids excited about reading. Also critical, is getting the right books into children's hands when they are on the precipice of cracking the code and becoming expert decoders.

This project will update our classroom library to better represent the diversity of our class; it will also provide books that one of my hesitant readers just can't resist (she is about the crack the code!).

Maintaining a library filled with great books is always a challenge and that has been even more true in this time of COVID-19. Books brings joy to so many kids by telling stories that mirror their lives and families. This is especially important for my students of color and it is more possible as more and more books come out that reflect their lived experiences. Books also provide my students with windows into the lives of others, increasing readers' empathy and social emotional skill set. A diverse range of books, like those in this project, is so important (for example, La Borinqueña, Evelyn del Rey Is Moving Away, and Turning Pages, by Sonia Sotomayor).
