My Students

I'm a special education teacher at a high poverty school and work with 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade students. I work with them on all subjects, but we're working especially hard on foundational reading skills. Becoming a good reader will improve their quality of life both in and beyond school.

My students are sweet, funny, hard-working kids who need a little more time and repetition to make things stick.

Many of them have experienced some real hardships, but they make me laugh every day, and it's really a joy to work with them.

My Project

All of my students are struggling readers. They need a little more time and repetition than some of their classmates. Because of this, they're also often reluctant readers. The work they're doing is hard, and it's extra important for them to have high-interest books at their level. The library in our school lost everything to a broken pipe last year and just re-opened in the last couple of months. We're fortunate to have a good book room in the building, but it's shared by everyone.

I'd love to have a classroom full of books so they're always accessible in every moment.

I truly believe that surrounding kids with quality books is one of the first steps to creating readers. I share my room with another special ed teacher and all of our students would use and benefit from these books. They'd be used during targeted small group and individual reading instruction as well as for independent reading time.
