Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are a Spanish dual-language classroom. This means that half of my students come from English speaking families, while the second half of the class comes from Spanish speaking families. In the classroom, we speak both languages. Half of the day is devoted to instruction in English, while the other half is devoted instruction in Spanish.

Not only do Spanish speaking students work in an environment where the home language is maintained, but many English students are also given this wonderful opportunity to be immersed in another powerful language.

The school is considered Title I and is found in a relatively low-income neighborhood.

While these statistics are theoretically nice, one thing is for sure, we are bilingual and proud.

My Project

I am a dual language teacher in New York which means I teach in English and in Spanish! My class desperately needs Spanish non-fiction books so that we can properly learn the units. That is my major need.

I've also added a lot of culturally relevant Read Aloud books and English books because I think it is important that children see themselves in their books.

Lastly, I've also asked for some seats that wobble. It can be exhausting sitting in a seat all day and kids need to move! Having seats that are flexible and move can really make a difference in how well they focus!
