Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a special education teacher in an ICT setting which means that we have special education children mixed with general education students. My students come from a variety of different cultures and backgrounds. We are a Title I school which means all of our students do not have access to many of the things children in other schools do. Unfortunately, my students are faced with challenges that most children do not have to face. The majority of my students are brand new to the country and unfamiliar with the language, customs and traditions of America. It takes a long time before they settle down and start to feel comfortable. This is a huge challenge which can impact their learning. My goal is to help them succeed not only in my classroom but in life. I have a wonderful group of students who work very hard to be successful.

My Project

Having a variety of picture books read-alongs that can be read to developing readers help them with their comprehension and fluency. We have the listening center but no books to go along with it.

Listening centers play a key role in the classroom.

It helps students focus on the words that are being read without being interrupted. It also provides a model of what a fluent reader should sound like. They will hear the words and be able to recognize what that word is when they are reading alone. It shows the students how to emphasize certain words to add a little something extra to the story telling. So many students have issues with reading because they think it is boring. With a listening center students will be eager to learn how to read because it will make reading a pleasure rather than a skill.
