Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a school where ninety-five point two percent of students are socio-economically disadvantaged and sixty-seven point seven percent are English Learners. I need my students to make a year and a half's worth of reading growth (or more) in order to prepare them for the college or career of their dreams.

I often find myself stopping at the store on my way home to pick up various things, but these little purchases add up over time.

As you know, a teacher's salary is barely enough to make ends meet for myself, let alone to cover the supplies of my students.

My Project

We need "good fit" books that will not only push them to the next reading level, but that will make them fall in love with reading in the process. "Good fit" books are challenging, accessible, and interesting. In a classroom where some students are flying through chapter books while others are stuck on letter sounds, this proves to be a difficult task. We also need whiteboards and erasers for phonics routines, and Play-Doh for rainy day recess.

It takes a lot of time, energy, and love to maintain a classroom for twenty-four first graders.

It also takes a bit of financial support. I work at a Title One school, which means we are severely under-resourced. But that shouldn't (and won't) prevent me from giving my students a quality education. Please consider helping us access the supplies that my students need and deserve!
