My Students

Books in the home are strongly linked to academic achievement. Those students who have books at home tend to do better in school and have higher test scores on standardized test. Books at home especially benefit children from disadvantaged families. My students come from such homes.

My students approach life with the enthusiasm and curiosity that all five-year-old children seem to have in abundance.

Despite living in a low socioeconomic area where their parents struggle to make ends meat, my students are incredibly hopeful and looking forward to the future. My students' parents want the best education possible for them, but due to financial constraints, many cannot afford to have books, puzzles, and other educational toys at home. It is up to me and the school to provide these wonderful, amazing, eager and bright kids with a wide variety of learning tools. We are a Title I school, which means that we do get funds to improve the academic achievement of the disadvantage. Not enough funds are given to provide every classroom with all the "extras" that they need. In fact, due to all the budget cuts, we are running very low on essential supplies such as pencils, crayons, scissors, erasers, and even multipurpose paper. New books for classroom libraries or gifts have been deemed non-essential.

My Project

My students love books so much that they often borrow books from our classroom library to take home. Unfortunately, many of these books don't come back. I don't really mind because I know that my students don't have many books at home. These books are loved so much that they end up finding a new home. I would like to gift my students a book as a Christmas gift. A book that doesn't have to be returned back and can be enjoyed over and over again. Having a book at home will continue to foster the love of reading in my students. In addition, it will help them succeed in school. A study by researchers from the University of Nevada and UCLA found that “Children growing up in homes with many books get 3 years more schooling than children from bookless homes, independent of their parents’ education, occupation, and class." I would like to contribute to the building of my students' home library. Even if it is only by one book.

Having books at home is a luxury that many of my students don't have.

Having a book at home to call their own that does not have to be returned to school or the public library will give my students a chance. A chance for a better education and a better life.
