My Students

My inner-city students do not have many books in their homes so I want to provide a literature-rich classroom environment to instill a love for reading and learning.

I am a 1st year multi-grade teacher educating 1st and 2nd grade students.

My class is very energetic and excited about learning. Their passion and enthusiasm for life motivates me to provide them with as many learning opportunities as possible, both within and outside of our classroom. My children are very "street smart." I want to make them "book smart" with your help.

My Project

This 2nd grade assortment of leveled books will be available to each of my students throughout the day in our classroom library. I will organize the books by reading level so children can browse the baskets independently and choose a book that is at his/her current reading level. Children become frustrated when they read a book that is too hard for them and bored when a book is too easy. I teach students how to find a "just right" book. With these leveled books students will feel successful and improve their reading skills. There are both fiction and nonfiction texts in this library. My students will learn various lessons about friendship with books like A Kiss For Little Bear, science with It Started As a Seed, social studies with Benjamin Franklin, etc.

Will you help us build our classroom library of leveled books?

Whenever I buy a book and add it to our library, we do a "show and tell" before I put it on the bookshelf. The children predict what book I bought and clap at the reveal. My students are beginning to understand that books hold the key to knowledge. Will you help me open their eyes and minds to more literature? Thank you for considering my request.
