Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located in the Bronx, where most students come from low income families that originate from different countries. The students lack exposure to age appropriate books at home to promote reading at a young age.

My class consists of 18 preschool students that are learning to develop appreciation for books as well as love for reading.

They love to hear stories with felt props because that keeps them involved and excited about reading. The concrete props attacks their attention like magnet and keep them focused from the begging to the end.

My Project

I am a requesting two different sets of storytelling puppets, a Storytelling Kit and a Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? Storytelling Kit. These books and puppets will be great tools in my Preschool class because the students will have the opportunity to practice reading these books on a daily basis during center time. The puppets or props will attract them to take the risk and pretend reading them over and over.

Exposing students to books at this age has tremendous benefits now and in their future education.

Encouraging students to read and retell using the props or puppets has a big impact on their oral language, vocabulary, and pre-reading skills. In addition, the students' comprehension and social skills will increase because they read in small groups. Kids love "playing" with puppets and pretend reading because it is fun and exciting. Let's help them to develop a natural interest for reading and give them the joy of leaning about the world around them.
