My Students
My classroom consists of first grade students from a variety of cultural and socio-economic background. We have students learning English as a second language and English speaking students who are still getting a grasp of just the basic English academic vocabulary. After a year and a half of online digital learning, they are ready to be back in the classroom.
There's so much for my first grade students to learn!
For most of my students, this is their first year in a classroom setting. Therefore, they are so excited to be in a classroom full of kids and school materials. These kids are so excited to touch and hold onto everything they are learning. They are always asking great questions about things they don't know.
With a group of 19 students, there are a variety of skills level and learning styles. I want to be able to engage all of my students in class by providing them with picture books to learn and read.
My Project
These books will be used for our story time. During story time, my students get really excited about the books we are reading. I want to provide them with some variety of texts that are fun and engaging to read that has great illustrations at the same time.
I have a handful of non-English speaking students this year and they don't quite understand the story when I read to them, but I can use the illustrations from the text to do picture talk with them and to help these students learn to speak English in class.
Also, at the same time students will be learning the different literature comprehension skills such as author's purpose, making inferences, making connections, story retelling, learning about characters, plots, and solutions.
We will also be using these books for different writings such as opinion writing, compare and contrast, informative/explanatory, and narrative writing.
