My Students

As I teacher at a Title I school in Harlem, I have a diverse set of students. Many of my students live in shelters or come from an extremely low socio-economic level. My students are faced with challenges and difficulties both inside and outside of the classroom. As a result of these challenges, my students have lost confidence and faith in their abilities and I am trying to provide creative, meaningful and rich experiences in the classroom, experiences that most of them have not experienced thus far.

The students in my classroom have severe emotional and behavioral disabilities.

The events and circumstances that they are dealing with in their personal lives are affecting their performance in the classroom. I am trying my best to close the achievement gap and let me students see that regardless of their situation, they have hope, they are loved, and they are capable of success. As a special education teacher, it is my role to provide specialized instruction for my students and I am in need of help in bringing my ideas to life for my children.

My Project

As a teacher in a special education classroom, I have a unique set of learners. My students are very reluctant readers. In fact,a few of them are non-readers. The books in my current library are very old, shattered and unable to capture the attention of my students. I am trying to build a love of reading and these books will help do just that.

My project will make a difference because not only will my 13 students enjoy these books, but so will the other students that will come after them.

By receiving this leveled library, I can engage my non-readers, reluctant readers and fluent readers all at the same time. It will also provide an opportunity for growth as there are several different levels that the students can aspire to reach.
