My Students

I want my classroom to be a place students WANT to come every day, not HAVE to come every day. After the past year, this has been a challenge with distance and hybrid learning schedules.

Each student is different, each year is different, and this is why I love my job.

I love being able to figure out what makes them excited to come to school every day, which makes them learn, and how I can help or possibly inspire them to reach their full potential.

My school is located in South Los Angeles where 100% of the students receive free lunch. My school is a Performing Arts Magnet, so the students come from a variety of homes all over Los Angeles County from various socio-economic backgrounds. I have some parents that are teachers, some that are construction workers, and some that work more than one job to make ends meet. What they all have in common is a desire to give their child the best education possible.

My Project

I am a strong believer that students need to read real books. When teaching upper elementary, most reading curriculum adopted by districts have students reading out of an anthology. Anthologies only offer an excerpt from books. I like students to read the whole book. I believe this will develop important reading skills to become successful in the future. First, it teaches stamina, students need to be able to read for a sustained period of time. Second, you are able to dive deep into character development and plot over the course of a chapter book. Finally, it is fun! I want my students to know reading is for school, but it can also be a great hobby.
